PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OREGON ROLLER DERBY PLAYER EMBARKS ON INTERNATIONAL EMPOWERMENT DOCUMENTARY
Portland, OR May 23, 2012 - Next month, Juvie Hall, co-captain of the Guns N’ Rollers, a Portland women’s roller derby team, begins international production on Flat Track Around the World, a documentary about the globally transformative power of women’s flat track roller derby. Juvie Hall (aka Diana Fedoroff) is collaborating with award-winning Portland filmmakers Cynthia Lopez and Alison Grayson to tell the story of the international women’s roller derby community.
On June 23rd, the all-female cast and crew depart for Mexico, where they will spend a month immersed in the world of Mexican women’s roller derby, skating with and documenting several roller derby teams in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Tijuana.
“The amount of support we’ve received for this first expedition for the film is truly astounding. Nearly 200 people funded our Kickstarter campaign to make this happen, and we’ve gotten just tons of help and support from the ladies in the Mexican derby leagues. We’re beyond excited to get the adventure underway,” said Juvie Hall.
During their epic adventure in Mexico, the Flat Track Around the World team will be blogging and posting videos and photos from the expedition. These can be seen on the film’s official website: www.flattrackaroundtheworld.com.
Mexico is the first of nine countries the team will visit for the film. In 2013, the team will also travel to derby leagues in Australia, Singapore, Israel, Russia, France, Norway, Brazil, and Peru, seeking to understand what it is about roller derby that drives women from diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts to take up the fast-growing sport and how the sport empowers them to change their own lives and communities.
